The 17th International Baltic Ballet festival is organized with picturesque classic and avant-garde performances in Riga and Preili between April 27 and May 28. The festival has become a delightful tradition of dancing style and significant cultural event of international scale wherein ballet and dancing performances, photo exhibition, special movie shows and even a dancing show with an excavator will take place this year. Opening of the Festival shall take place at shopping mall “Origo” at Riga Railway Station.
„I am glad about the fact that the International Baltic Ballet Festival will take place in its splendor and diversity in Latvia for the seventeenth time already, which would ensure wonderful dancing performances between classics and avant-garde. It was quite unusual, but gala concert would take place already in the beginning of the Festival where world-known ballet stars from all over the world would perform” said Ms. Lita Beiris, director of the Festival.
Opening of the Festival will take place at Riga Railway Station at 5 p.m. on April 27 and will be open to everybody as usually, by ensuring surprises and intrigues. But just at 7 p.m. on April 30, all fans of dancing are invited to the most intriguing event of the Festival at Latvian National Opera House, Gala concert where world-known ballet starts from the Netherlands, Philippines, Russia, Portugal, USA, Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia will perform.
Dancing group „Beau geste” from France will be one of the special surprises of this Festival with performance-show “Unusual transport” (Transports exceptionnels) for dancers and an excavator not yet seen in Latvia at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on May 7 at square of shopping mall “Origo”.
Mr Denis Duclos, Director of French Institute in Latvia told that „this dancing show uncovers relations which are formed between a human and his dancing partner- excavator via dancing movements. Since 2005 this performance was done more than 160 times in different cities of France and abroad.”
In its turn, the most artistically colourful Spanish company, Victor Ullate Ballet, will perform “Magic of the Art of Dance” (El arte de la Danza) at 7 p.m. on May 14 at Latvian National Opera House where different academic disciplines of classic ballet are combined with flamboyant passion of Spanish school and sensitive plastic of Latin dancing.
Within the framework of the Festival, several dancing related art exhibitions will be displayed. One-man exhibition “Fascination of Ballet Art” of excellent Moscow photographer Igor Zaharkin (Moscow) will be exhibited on Ridzene Street in shopping mall „Galerija Centrs” from April 28, whereas another two exhibitions will be opened on May 2 - art exhibition “Ballet in diversity” at 4 p.m. in Mentzendorf House and Latvian artists’ exhibition “Dedication to dance” at 6 p.m. in gallery “Jana seta”.
In its turn, documentary “Pina” by Wim Wenders, Germany, devoted to legend artist of dance Pina Bausch will be showed at a special show in cinema “Splendid Palace” with support of Goethe Institute in Riga at 7 p.m. on April 28. On May 16, everybody is also welcome to see a German documentary "Dancing Dreams – Youngsters Dancing Performance of Pina Bausch “Kontakthof”" at Goethe Institute at 6.30 p.m. in Riga free of charge.
Ms Antra Balode, Assistant at Culture Programme Department, Goethe-Institute in Riga said that „in documentary „Pina” two legendary persons of German culture meet and create a whole. Characteristic features of Wim Wenders are not expressed much for the first time as he allowed putting meaningful language of dance and art of Pina Bausch into the foreground this time”.
The dancing marathon started two years ago will be continued this year at concert “Dancing rhythms” of the most vivid Latvian dancing groups on May 9 at VEF Cultural Centre. Magic of yoga art will be offered again by yoga group “Dance lab” by Tatjana Binde at 7 p.m. on May 10 in the Hall of Riga Stradins University. In its turn, Latvian National Ballet will give pleasure to population of Preili region with performance “Tango plus”–“Mary’s Dream”–“Pas de Quatre” at 7 p.m. on May 23 at Preili Regional Cultural Centre.
„Artists of Latvian National Ballet are glad to leave Riga and perform in Preili within the Festival despite the fact that this year will be full of road shows. Road shows have taken place in Athens and Italy already, but tours to Finland, Greece and other countries are anticipated, too,” commented Mr Aivars Leimanis, Artistic Director of Latvian National Ballet.
To conclude the Festival, one of the most popular US dancing company Ailey II will visit the Baltic States for the first time during their European tour whose regular staff consists of 12 dancers having proved themselves with great success all over the world at 7 p.m. on May 28 at Latvian National Opera House with support of “Latvijas Mobilais Telefons”.
“I saw Alvin Ailey in Boston in 2981 for the first time, and it was one of the most memorable performances in my life. It was like a dream to fetch Ailey here to Riga. I would like to thank Lita Beiris and International Baltic Ballet Festival that it really happens. The organizers of the 17th International Baltic Ballet Festival invite mass media representatives to a press conference where programme of the upcoming Festival in April and May, special guests and their performances, and sponsors of the Festival will be introduced to musters. The press conference will be convened at 12 a.m. on April 3, 2012 in Red Hall of Latvian National Opera House.
As reported previously, the 17th International Baltic Ballet Festival will take place between April 27 and May 28, 2012 in Riga and Preili by offering ballet and dancing performances, photo exhibitions, special movies and even a dancing show to the audience. Sale of tickets for all events of the Festival started in early March.
